How I’d Split Up the County

Los Angeles and Central: Los Angeles itself plus two unincorporated communities, East Los Angeles and Florence-Graham, where the county runs local services, and Inglewood near LAX.

The Westside and South Bay: From Santa Monica on the coast down through the South Bay beach towns and inland to Hawthorne, Gardena and Carson.

Long Beach and the Gateway Cities: Long Beach and the cities between the 710 and the 605, most of them built out in the years after World War II.

Pasadena, the Verdugos and the San Gabriel Valley: Pasadena and Glendale at the foot of the San Gabriel and Verdugo mountains, Burbank, and the San Gabriel Valley cities along the 10 out to Pomona.

Santa Clarita and the Antelope Valley: Santa Clarita and the two Antelope Valley cities, Lancaster and Palmdale, north of the San Fernando Valley.
